Synopsis

Wisconsin, 1931. Mindy Zahn cannot work out why her parents walked away from the family farm and left her younger sister, who does not speak, in her care. Then her mother's warning to keep the girl safe stops sounding cryptic and starts being a matter of staying alive.

Dr. Nick Matrone has been looking for something to settle a tired heart, and Mindy's cheerfulness is the closest he has come. He has a past he would not wish on anyone, so he offers friendship and nothing more. Then he finds himself needing to save her life.

As the danger closes in, the relationship they invented for her protection starts asking both of them whether they are willing to make it real.

Book five of Danielle Grandinetti's Harbored in Crow's Nest, a Depression-era romantic suspense series set on the Wisconsin shore of Lake Michigan.
