Rock Bottom Girl

Marley Cicero left Culpepper, Pennsylvania as a teenager and never planned to come back. At thirty-six she is out of money, out of a job, and moving into her parents' basement, which is how she ends up substitute teaching at her old high school and, through a chain of events she does not entirely control, coaching the girls' soccer team.

The team is a disaster, the school district is broke, and Jake Weston — the gym teacher, and the boy she never got over — is on the sidelines being aggravatingly helpful. Marley's attempt to rebuild a losing team turns into a reckoning with the town, the friends, and the version of herself she left behind.

Lucy Score's small-town romantic comedy leans on banter, an ensemble of hometown misfits, and a heroine whose second chance is as much about herself as it is about the man she keeps trying not to want.
