Synopsis

The Words follows Lennon and Phoenix from their final year of high school, where Lennon is enlisted to tutor a failing Phoenix so he can graduate. Phoenix spends his free time fronting a band, Sharp Objects, with his best friend Storm, chasing a music career that feels more real to him than school ever has. Tutoring sessions turn into a close friendship, and Lennon becomes one of the few steady, supportive presences in Phoenix's life as his band starts to take off.

That closeness develops into romance, but the relationship collapses under the weight of choices neither of them is ready to own, and Lennon and Phoenix part on unresolved, painful terms just as Phoenix's music career explodes.

Years later, Phoenix is a famous but spiraling rock star, and Lennon — now working as a sober companion — is hired to help him get clean during a tour. Forced back into daily contact, they have to work through old wounds, unspoken resentment, and the possibility of a second chance, all while Phoenix fights to stay sober on the road.
