Synopsis

On November 9, Fallon meets Ben outside a diner on her last day in Los Angeles — both certain they will never see each other again. Instead, they agree to meet on every November 9 for five years, with no contact in between. What begins as a spontaneous promise between strangers evolves across five annual encounters into something neither of them anticipated, each year revealing new dimensions of who they are and what they have concealed from each other. Structured around the five meetings, the novel uses a ticking-clock format to examine how people change, what they hide from people they love, and whether a relationship built on annual snapshots can survive the weight of continuous reality.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the November 9 arrangement between Fallon and Ben?

They agree to meet on every November 9 for five years — spending the entire day together — with the rule that they will have no contact in between. The structure means readers experience the relationship only in these annual snapshots, watching years of change compressed into a single day each time.

  • What happened to Fallon before the novel begins?

Fallon survived a house fire that left her with significant physical scarring. The fire altered the trajectory of her intended career, and the circumstances around it are one of the novel's primary mysteries. The full story of how the fire started is a central revelation.

  • Is Ben hiding something from Fallon?
  • How does the five-year structure affect the pacing of the novel?

Each chapter covers one November 9 — so the novel advances in year-long leaps rather than continuous narrative. This creates a telescoping effect where readers observe significant character growth in compressed form and must infer what happened in the gaps. The structure is used deliberately to control when information is revealed.

  • Is November 9 a standalone novel?

Yes — it is a complete story in one volume with no sequel and no character crossovers to Hoover's other novels.

  • What does November 9 explore thematically beyond the central romance?

The novel examines how identity is shaped by trauma, how people perform versions of themselves for the people they love, and whether a relationship can survive the disclosure of a foundational deception. It also engages with the way creative ambition (Ben wants to be a writer) can lead people to treat real experiences as material.

  • When was November 9 published?

November 9 was published on November 10, 2015 — the day after the date for which the novel is named. The publication date was a deliberate marketing choice that mirrored the novel's own anniversary structure.
