Synopsis

Quinn and Graham fell in love under improbable circumstances and married believing love was enough to sustain them. Years later, the marriage is breaking under the weight of infertility — repeated losses, failed treatments, and the quiet mutual withdrawal that happens when two people grieve in incompatible ways and can no longer reach each other. Told in alternating timelines that place the falling-in-love past alongside the breaking-apart present, All Your Perfects asks whether a love that was real can survive not getting the life it was promised. A number-one New York Times bestseller, it is the third novel in the Hopeless series and stands alone for readers unfamiliar with the earlier books.

Colleen Hoover

Colleen Hoover was born on December 11, 1979, in Sulphur Springs, Texas, and grew up in nearby Saltillo. She earned a degree in social work from Texas A&M University–Commerce in 2004 and worked in social work, latterly as a counselor for the federal WIC nutrition program. She began her first novel, Slammed, on a borrowed laptop in 2011, originally intending it as a Christmas gift for her mother, and self-published it in 2012; its word-of-mouth success led to a publishing deal with Atria Books....

Frequently asked questions

  • Can All Your Perfects be read without reading the Hopeless series?

Yes — it was written to stand alone. Quinn and Graham are not the protagonists of earlier series entries, and no knowledge of prior books is required to understand their story.

  • How does the dual timeline structure work?

The novel alternates between past chapters (showing how Quinn and Graham fell in love and early marriage) and present chapters (the marriage in crisis). The contrast between who they were and who they have become is the structural engine of its emotional impact.

  • Why is infertility the central conflict rather than a romantic obstacle?

Hoover has said she wanted to write about a type of grief that is largely invisible in fiction — the losses that happen before a life begins, and how they strain a relationship from the inside. The novel treats infertility as its entire subject, not a medical subplot.

  • Does the novel have a hopeful ending?
  • Did All Your Perfects reach the bestseller list?

It debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list upon its July 2018 release.

  • What content should readers know before starting?

The novel deals extensively with pregnancy loss, infertility, and the psychological toll of failed treatments. It also contains depictions of self-harm and suicidal ideation. Readers who have experienced infertility or pregnancy loss should approach it with that awareness.

  • How does All Your Perfects fit into the Hopeless series?

It is Book 3 in the Hopeless series. Quinn and Graham appeared in earlier entries in the series universe. The series follows connected characters from the same world rather than a single continuous storyline.

  • Is this book part of a series I need to read first?

This novel functions as a standalone story and does not require reading any other books to understand the plot. It is technically associated with the Hopeless series due to a minor reference to a character from that series, but this connection is not essential to the narrative.

  • What inspired the story in this book?

The central premise of the love letters was inspired by a real-life tradition the author observed between her sister and brother-in-law, who locked letters in a box to be opened on their tenth wedding anniversary.
