Synopsis

In the spring of 1141, the civil war tearing England apart claims a knight dear to Brother Cadfael's heart. As the Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul prepares to celebrate the feast of Saint Winifred, a flood of pilgrims descends on Shrewsbury, and somewhere among the crowd walks the knight's killer.

Cadfael's attention keeps returning to two young men traveling together, bound by a strange and private vow neither will fully explain. As pilgrims come and go and old wounds from the war resurface, Cadfael has to separate genuine faith from calculated deception before he can find peace with a death that struck too close to home.
