Synopsis

In the autumn of 1145, a political defection plunges England into further turmoil as Philip FitzRobert switches allegiance to King Stephen, handing over crucial garrisons. Amidst this upheaval, thirty knights are taken hostage, but one, Olivier de Bretagne, vanishes without a trace. Brother Cadfael, a monk with a keen mind, is determined to find him, even as his primary lead, the unscrupulous castellan Brian de Soulis, is found murdered.
