The Old Man and the Sea

1952

Synopsis

Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman, has gone eighty-four days without catching a fish. Alone in his skiff far out in the Gulf Stream, he hooks an enormous marlin — a fish greater than any he has known — and is dragged into a days-long, solitary struggle that becomes a test of endurance, skill, and will against a creature he comes to love as a brother.

Ernest Hemingway's spare, luminous novella distills a lifetime of his themes into a single ordeal at sea: dignity in defeat, the grace of doing a hard thing well, and the loneliness of a man measured only against himself. The book that helped secure his Nobel Prize, it remains a small, perfect parable of struggle and pride.
