Synopsis

Retired from the force for five years, Inspector Rebus is pulled back into a case that should have stayed buried — a cold case involving a missing girl that unravels into a decades-old string of disappearances. As he works the case alongside his former partner Siobhan Clarke, Rebus's own past, his relationship with the criminal underworld, and his growing disillusionment with the institution he once served all converge. The title is a nod to a misheard lyric, and the novel's melancholic, gritty tone reflects a man wrestling with his place in a world that no longer needs him.
