Synopsis

Retired detective John Rebus is pulled back into the fray when the murder of a fellow officer, Francis Haggard, uncovers a web of corruption and a decades-old secret that Rebus himself helped bury. As he joins a Major Inquiry Team alongside former colleagues Siobhan Clarke and Malcolm Fox, the investigation spirals into the murky underworld of Edinburgh's criminal and police circles, and the truth about a man named Jack Oram begins to resurface. Told across eight days of investigation framed by a prologue and epilogue, the novel is a gritty, atmospheric meditation on loyalty, the cost of old secrets, and the slow erosion of a man's conscience.
