Synopsis

As his career in Edinburgh's CID draws to a close, Inspector John Rebus is pulled into a case that refuses to let him go: the brutal murder of a Russian poet and the suspicious death of a sound recordist linked to him. The investigation leads Rebus and his partner Siobhan Clarke through the city's underworld and into the orbit of Morris Gerald Cafferty, a ruthless local gangster whose influence runs deeper than any single crime. As Rebus faces suspension and the end of his tenure, the case forces him to confront old enemies, a young officer's loyalty, and the true cost of the secrets he's kept for years.
