Fugelsang, who was raised by a Catholic nun and a Franciscan brother and has spent his career mixing comedy with political commentary, works through scripture verse by verse to contrast what he presents as the text's actual teachings — centered on care for the poor, the sick, and the marginalized — against the positions taken by many contemporary religious-right political figures and institutions in the United States.
