Abdel Wahab El-Messiri (1938–2008) was an Egyptian scholar and philosopher who spent his career analyzing secularism and Western modernity. He is most famous for his eight-volume Encyclopedia of Jews, Judaism and Zionism, one of the major Arabic-language encyclopedic works of the twentieth century. A professor of English literature by training, he later became a leading Egyptian public intellectual and served as general coordinator of the Kefaya opposition movement.
