Synopsis

On the world of Komashi, two people live in radically different realities. Yumi is a yoki-hijo — a sacred summoner whose every moment is prescribed by ritual, who must call spirits from the ground through elaborate stacking of stones to bring warmth to a land of perpetual cold. Nikaro is a Nightmare Painter, one of a caste who wanders the city of Kilahito at night painting over the nightmare creatures that appear in pools of darkness, preventing them from manifesting and threatening the citizens who sleep unaware. When their souls become tangled across the barrier between their two worlds, each must inhabit the other's life. Inspired by the manga Hikaru no Go, the film Your Name, and Final Fantasy X, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter is one of Sanderson's most emotionally resonant works, with a romance at its center that earns its warmth across pages of cultural contrast.

Frequently asked questions

  • What inspired Yumi and the Nightmare Painter?

Sanderson has cited three inspirations: the manga Hikaru no Go (a game prodigy guided by a ghost), the film Your Name (body-swapping across different realities), and Final Fantasy X (a world of spirits and sacrifice). The book combines these into an original Cosmere story.

  • Is this part of the 2022 Kickstarter?

Yes — it was Secret Project 3, one of four novels Sanderson released from the 2022 Kickstarter campaign that raised $41.7 million.

  • Is it part of the Cosmere?

Yes. Yumi is set on Komashi in the Cosmere universe. The narrator — again Hoid — appears, and certain elements connect to broader Cosmere cosmology.

  • Does this book have a romance?

Yes — the central relationship between Yumi and Nikaro develops slowly across the cultural and situational barriers between them, and the romance is a core part of the book's emotional payoff.

  • Do I need to have read other Cosmere books first?

No — like Tress, it is designed as a standalone adventure. Cosmere readers will recognize Hoid's narrator role and find additional meaning in certain details.

  • Who illustrated the book?

Yumi and the Nightmare Painter features illustrations by Aliya Chen, whose art accompanies the text as part of the Kickstarter edition's design.
