Synopsis

A man called Nomad cannot stop moving. On any world he visits, if he stays too long, a pursuing force called the Night Brigade will catch him — and he knows what happens when they do. He arrives on Canticle, a planet so close to its sun that only a small habitable band of land exists between the lethal daylight and the frozen darkness of the night side, constantly moving to stay in the twilight zone. There, Nomad is caught in a conflict between the planet's enslaved population and the Cinder King who rules them. The Sunlit Man is the most Cosmere-knowledgeable of the Secret Projects, featuring a protagonist (Nomad, also known as Sigzil) who appears in earlier Stormlight Archive books — readers familiar with his history will find the reunion more resonant.

About the author

B
Brandon Sanderson

Born in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1975, Brandon Sanderson spent his early twenties working graveyard shifts at a hotel — writing novels at the front desk between guest check-ins. By the time his debut, Elantris, was published by Tor Books in 2005, he had completed thirteen novels in the drawer. Frequently asked questions

  • Who is Nomad and do I need to know his history?

Nomad is Sigzil, a Windrunner who appeared in The Stormlight Archive. Readers of Stormlight will recognize him immediately; readers who haven't read Stormlight can still follow his story, though some emotional resonance is lost.

  • Is The Sunlit Man part of the Cosmere?

Yes — it is one of the most Cosmere-connected of all Sanderson's standalone works, set in the far-future Cosmere and featuring explicit references to events across the saga.

  • Is it part of the 2022 Kickstarter?

Yes — it was Secret Project 4 from the Kickstarter that raised $41.7 million.

  • What is the chase mechanic that drives the plot?

Nomad cannot remain on any world long enough for the Night Brigade to locate him — if he stays too long, they arrive and the consequences are catastrophic. On Canticle, the world's moving habitable band creates a physical constraint that echoes this temporal one.

  • Is this a good starting point for the Cosmere?

No — The Sunlit Man rewards readers who have already spent significant time in the Cosmere, particularly those who have read the Stormlight Archive. New readers would miss much of its context.

  • Do I need to read other books before this one?

While this story functions as a standalone narrative, it is deeply integrated into the broader Cosmere universe and contains significant references to The Stormlight Archive, Mistborn, and other works that may be confusing or spoilery without prior knowledge. Many readers recommend being caught up on The Stormlight Archive series before starting this book to fully appreciate the context and character history.

  • Where does this book fit in the overall Cosmere timeline?

This novel takes place significantly further into the future of the Cosmere than most other published works, offering a glimpse into the state of the universe well beyond the events of current major series.
