Synopsis

Allomancer Jak and the Pits of Eltania is a comic, pulp-style adventure set in Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn world, between the events of The Alloy of Law and Shadows of Self. It presents one of the exaggerated adventure stories the in-world explorer Allomancer Jak publishes about his own exploits in the Roughs, this time an account of hunting the fabled Treasure of the Survivor through the koloss-infested pits of Eltania. The tale is annotated throughout by Jak's long-suffering Terris steward, Handerwym, whose footnotes puncture the narrator's boasting and reveal how embellished his heroics really are. Written as a deliberate pastiche of old pulp adventure fiction, it is a comic aside to the grittier Wax and Wayne novels rather than a continuation of their plot. The story was first published in 2014 as part of the Mistborn Adventure Game's Alloy of Law supplement and was later collected in Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection (2016).

Frequently asked questions

  • How does Allomancer Jak and the Pits of Eltania connect to the Wax and Wayne books?

It's a self-contained pulp-adventure novella set between The Alloy of Law and Shadows of Self, not a continuation of their plot. The story is presented as one of the exaggerated adventure tales the in-world character Allomancer Jak publishes about himself, so it's a comic aside to Wax and Wayne's story rather than a chapter in it.

  • Do I need to read it to follow the main Wax and Wayne series?

No. It's an optional bonus story — the four Wax and Wayne novels (The Alloy of Law, Shadows of Self, The Bands of Mourning, and The Lost Metal) can be read without it.

  • Where was this story first published?

It first appeared in 2014 as part of the Alloy of Law supplement to the Mistborn Adventure Game, and was later collected in Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection (2016).
