Synopsis

In the last year of World War I, Laura Iven—a combat nurse invalided home to Halifax after being wounded—receives word that her younger brother Freddie is missing and presumed dead at the Belgian front. Refusing to believe it, she returns to Flanders as a volunteer nurse to search for him. In a parallel thread, Freddie wakes trapped in a collapsed pillbox beside a wounded German soldier, and the two find shelter with an enigmatic stranger who can make the horror of the trenches seem to vanish. A haunting, supernatural-tinged historical novel told in alternating timelines.
