Synopsis

Two timelines, one stretch of Mediterranean coastline: in present-day Marseille, young physicist Omar al-Qaddah is drawn into a mystery reaching back into deep history. Centuries before Christ, on that same ground, the poet Qadmus studies under the great traveler and explorer Bithias (Pytheas). Cutting between the ancient Greek world and the modern one, the novel explores the enduring conflict between science and faith and the old legends of Gog and Magog — a work its reviewers have called "pure paper cinema."

Osama Abdel Raouf El-Shazly (b. 1974) is an Egyptian orthopedic surgeon and novelist. He is a professor of orthopedic surgery at Ain Shams University's Faculty of Medicine in Cairo, a pioneer of foot and ankle surgery in Egypt and the Arab world, and also teaches the history of medicine there and at the University of Barcelona.
