The Path of Ascension 5
Matt, Liz, and Aster have reached Tier 10, and with it the threshold for the Pather tournament — the first arena where they face competitors as strong as they are. After years of guidance from Luna, they enter under unusual terms: they must compete twice, once openly as themselves and once behind masks, with restrictions meant to prove that their standing owes nothing to reputation or backing.
The Path of Ascension 5 is the fifth book in C. Mantis's twelve-volume progression-fantasy series, first serialized on Royal Road and published by Aethon Books. The series follows Matt, an orphan whose Talent was rated detrimental, as he joins the Empire's Path of Ascension alongside his partner Liz and his Bond, the Arctic fox Aster, climbing Tier by Tier through rifts, dungeons, and training under some of the Empire's most powerful figures.
The books blend LitRPG framing — dungeons, skills, measurable Tiers — with a cultivation-style advancement system closer to xianxia, built to stay logically and internally consistent. Where earlier volumes centered on delves and steady advancement, book 5 turns to open competition, testing the team against peers rather than monsters.
Known as Matt. Orphaned by a rift-spawned monster attack, he joins the Path of Ascension despite a Talent rated detrimental.
Liz — Matt's teammate and partner on the Path of Ascension.
Matt's Bond, an Arctic fox who grows in power alongside him on the Path.
Mentor whose years of guidance prepare Matt, Liz, and Aster for the Pather tournament.
This book is the fifth installment in a continuous series and is intended to be read in order following the previous entries to understand the character development and ongoing plot threads.
The characters adopt masked identities to protect themselves from rival factions who would target them if their true capabilities and identities were fully exposed during the competition.
