Synopsis

Jane Eyre grows up an orphan and takes a post as governess at Thornfield Hall. There she meets its owner, Mr. Rochester, a man hiding more than he admits. Jane has her own secret too: she has always been able to see ghosts, and Thornfield turns out to be full of them.

The Society for the Relocation of Wayward Spirits calls her a Beacon, a ghost-seer rare enough to be worth a salary. She turns down the job and goes to Thornfield instead. Charlotte Bronte, her school friend, starts writing down what happens to her: first a murder mystery, then a romance.

Alexander Blackwood is a Society investigator falling for Charlotte, and he tracks the same haunting from London. The novel moves between his voice, Charlotte's and Jane's in turn, playing its Gothic setup, an orphaned governess, a house of ghosts, for comedy rather than dread. It reads closer to farce than to the book it retells.

This is the second novel in the Lady Janies series, following My Lady Jane.
