Synopsis

حليمة (Halima) is a 1964 novel by the Tunisian writer Mohamed Laroussi el-Metoui, set in the Tunisian countryside in the years leading up to independence. It follows Halima, a young woman from a rural family, as her life becomes entangled with the underground resistance against French colonial rule.

Marrying Abdelhamid and moving with him to the capital, Halima steps into a wider world where private life and clandestine struggle overlap. Through her eyes the novel offers an intimate, unadorned portrait of rural Tunisian life — its people, its hardships, and the simple human motives that feed a revolution.

A short, direct novel by one of Tunisia's foremost modern writers — the author whose التوت المر was later named among the hundred best Arabic novels — حليمة is a quiet study of ordinary lives caught in a moment of national awakening.
