A Change of Climate
Synopsis
A Change of Climate is a literary novel by Hilary Mantel set in 1980s Norfolk, following Ralph and Anna Eldred as their carefully constructed present unravels. The story moves between the couple's present and their past as missionaries in a South African township in the 1950s, where a decades-old trauma they have suppressed resurfaces and threatens to destroy their family.
Mantel's prose is meditative and precise, and the novel is a study of memory, forgiveness, and the ways the past shapes the present. It won the 1994 Guardian Fiction Prize and was a finalist for the Booker Prize.
