    Lights OutNavessa Allen · 2024Into Darkness #1
Community rating: 4.07 out of 5

Aly Cappellucci sees the worst of humanity every shift. As a trauma nurse, she has grown numb to blood and crisis, and she chases the adrenaline she no longer feels at work in the dark corners of the internet — in particular, the videos of a masked man who calls himself the.faceless.man. When a reckless late-night comment invites him to make her fantasies real, she never expects him to say yes. Josh Hammond has spent his life hiding: behind a mask, behind a screen, behind the wall he built between himself and the father whose face he shares. Aly is the first person to see him and not flinch. What begins as a dangerous game between two strangers becomes something neither can walk away from. But Aly has drawn the attention of someone far more dangerous than the man in the mask, and the fantasy is about to turn deadly real. Navessa Allen's viral dark romance is a twisted, darkly funny, and unapologetically explicit story about obsession, control, and the thin line between fear and desire. The first book in the Into Darkness series pairs a heroine with a taste for the macabre and an antihero determined to protect what's his, whatever it takes.

    Hunting AdelineH. D. Carlton · 2022Cat and Mouse #2

    5.0

Hunting Adeline picks up in the aftermath of Haunting Adeline, and it does not soften. Adeline has fallen into the hands of the very organization Zade Meadows has devoted his life to destroying — a ritualistic network of powerful men who traffic women and children. While Adeline endures captivity, Zade unleashes everything he is to find her. The novel is split in two: the first half follows the hunt and rescue; the second follows the long, difficult work of recovery, as Zade and Adeline confront what was done to her and turn toward the people responsible. Their bond is tested by trauma, vengeance, and the question of whether either of them can be whole again. The second and final book of H.D. Carlton's Cat and Mouse Duet, Hunting Adeline is an extremely graphic dark romance that deals explicitly with sexual violence, trafficking, and torture. It should only be read alongside its full content warnings.

Book cover of Fifty Shades of Grey
Fifty Shades of GreyE. L. James · 2012Fifty Shades #1
Community rating: 3.06 out of 5

When literature student Anastasia Steele stands in for her sick roommate to interview Christian Grey, a young, staggeringly wealthy entrepreneur, she expects a routine assignment and finds herself unnerved and intrigued in equal measure. Christian, in turn, pursues her with an intensity that is flattering, unsettling, and impossible to ignore. Their attraction is immediate, but Christian warns Ana that he is not a hearts-and-flowers man, and that any relationship with him comes on his terms. As Ana is drawn into Christian's carefully controlled world, she discovers the tastes and rules he lives by, and the contract he wants her to sign. What follows is an explicit, emotionally charged romance about desire, power, and the limits each of them is willing to test. Christian's guardedness hides a painful history, and Ana must decide how much of herself she is willing to surrender to reach the man beneath the control. The first book in E. L. James's global phenomenon, Fifty Shades of Grey became a cultural touchstone and one of the best-selling novels of its era. It is a frank, provocative adult romance whose depiction of a dominant-submissive relationship sparked wide debate, and which launched a trilogy followed by companion retellings from Christian's point of view.

    Book cover of Lolita
    LolitaVladimir Nabokov · 1955
Community rating: 3.49 out of 5

Humbert Humbert, a cultured European academic newly arrived in America, narrates his own story from a prison cell. He rents a room in a New England town and becomes fixated on his landlady's twelve-year-old daughter, Dolores Haze, whom he privately calls Lolita. To stay near her, he marries her mother, and when circumstances leave him her sole guardian, he takes the girl on a long, restless drive across the United States. Told entirely in Humbert's ornate, self-justifying voice, the novel is a masterpiece of unreliable narration: seductive, allusive, and grotesque at once. Nabokov gives his predator dazzling language precisely so the reader must work to see past it to the child being harmed and the life being destroyed. First published in 1955 and long controversial, Lolita is widely regarded as one of the great and most difficult novels of the twentieth century, a dark study of obsession, delusion, and the abuse of power, and a demonstration of how beautiful prose can be used to conceal monstrous acts.

Book cover of A Touch of Darkness
    A Touch of DarknessScarlett St. Clair · 2019Hades x Persephone Saga #1
Community rating: 3.62 out of 5

Persephone, Goddess of Spring, has hidden among mortals for years in the glittering city of New Athens. Cursed so that everything she touches withers rather than blooms, she keeps her divinity secret and builds a life as a journalism student, determined to belong to the human world she loves. Then a single night at Nevernight—the exclusive club run by Hades, God of the Dead—changes everything. Coaxed into a wager she doesn't understand, Persephone finds herself bound by a divine contract: create life in the barren Underworld, or forfeit her freedom to Hades forever. As she returns again and again to meet the terms of the bargain, the cold, calculating god proves far more complicated than his fearsome reputation, and the antagonism between them slides into something neither can control—complicated by her overbearing mother Demeter, jealous rivals, and Persephone's own fight to be seen as more than a fragile goddess. The first book in Scarlett St. Clair's Hades x Persephone Saga, A Touch of Darkness reimagines the Greek myth as a steamy, contemporary dark romance about power, autonomy, and the terms on which two immortals learn to love.

Love on the BrainAli Hazelwood · 2022The Love Hypothesis #2
Community rating: 3.71 out of 5

Neuroscientist Bee Königswasser lives by one rule: what would Marie Curie do? So when NASA offers her the chance to co-lead a dream neuroengineering project, she says yes — even though it means working alongside Levi Ward, the coldly gorgeous engineer who made his dislike of her plain back in grad school. On-site in Houston, Bee's equipment goes missing, her authority is undercut, and she's certain Levi is behind at least some of it. But the more time they spend together, the more she wonders whether she's been reading him wrong all along, and whether the animosity she remembers was ever the whole story. Ali Hazelwood's second STEMinist rom-com pairs sharp workplace comedy and slow-burn tension with a heroine learning to put her own heart on the line.

Josh Chen is a cocky, charming aspiring doctor who can usually get anything he wants; Jules Ambrose is the fiery best friend of his sister, and the one woman who has always seen straight through him. Their long-running, very public mutual hatred boils over when Jules turns up working at his hospital, and one night together leads to an enemies-with-benefits arrangement built on three rules: no jealousy, no strings, no falling in love. As the line between hate and want blurs, both are forced to face the private wounds they hide behind banter and bravado. The third Twisted book pairs sharp comedic sparring with real emotional stakes, continuing the interconnected friend-group saga and tying back to the cast of Twisted Love.

Isabella Valencia is chaos in human form, impulsive, vivid, and exactly the distraction he cannot afford. Their attraction is inconvenient, forbidden, and impossible to ignore, forcing the buttoned-up king of pride to confront how much of his control is really armor. The second Kings of Sin book is the series' brightest, an opposites-attract, grumpy-sunshine romance set against boardroom stakes. A standalone within Ana Huang's interconnected universe, it pairs the controlled hero with the free spirit who upends everything he thought he wanted.
