John D. MacDonald is widely recognized for his Travis McGee series, which features a "salvage consultant" who recovers property for clients and keeps half the value. These novels are celebrated for their vivid Florida settings and McGee's distinctive moral code.
Readers often start with "The Deep Blue Good-by," the first book in the Travis McGee series, to follow the character's development and adventures chronologically. While many of his other works are standalones, the McGee novels are best enjoyed in publication order.
Several of John D. MacDonald's novels have been adapted for the screen, including "Cape Fear," which received two notable film adaptations. His Travis McGee series also saw an adaptation with "Darker than Amber."
In 1972, the Mystery Writers of America named John D. MacDonald a Grand Master, the organization's highest honor, recognizing his lifetime body of work in the mystery and crime genre.
