Patience, the fifteen-year-old daughter of the deposed Heptarch, has been raised in secret by her father's tutor Angel to master the arts of diplomacy, combat, and the ancient traditions of her people. When her father, Peace, dies under the shadow of a usurper king's rule, Patience sets out on a perilous journey toward the city of Cranning, drawn by a mysterious and ancient force known as the Unwyrm. Along the way she is joined by Angel and a mysterious woman named Sken, and must confront the choices that will determine whether she becomes the savior or the destroyer of her world.
