Synopsis

On an island in the Great Massasauga Swamp, herbalist Hermine “Herself” Zook has long served as a healer and a polarizing figure for the residents of nearby Whiteheart, Michigan. Her granddaughter, eleven-year-old Dorothy “Donkey” Zook, navigates a wild childhood while waiting for her estranged mother, Rose Thorn, to return. As family secrets and local tensions rise, the lives of these three women become inextricably linked to the landscape and the volatile community surrounding them.
