Synopsis

The Waste Lands is the third novel in Stephen King's Dark Tower saga, blending epic dark fantasy, science fiction, horror, and the mythology of the American West. It continues the journey of Roland Deschain, the last gunslinger, toward the Dark Tower that anchors all worlds, alongside the companions he drew from 20th-century New York in the previous book.

The novel is built in two halves. The first resolves a time paradox threatening Roland and the boy Jake Chambers, drawing Jake back across the worlds; the second is a harrowing passage through Lud, a decayed city ruled by feuding survivors, and onto Blaine the Mono, a lethally insane sentient train obsessed with riddles. King expands the world's cosmology, its ruined technology, and its ka-tet bonds, ending on one of the series' most notorious cliffhangers.

Richer and stranger than the earlier volumes, The Waste Lands deepens the Dark Tower's themes of fate, sacrifice, and worlds that have 'moved on.' It should be read after The Gunslinger and The Drawing of the Three.
