Synopsis

In a near-future California under permanent quarantine, the wealthy upload their consciousness before death to remain with their families as "companions," while the less fortunate are uploaded without consent and rented out to strangers as unpaid, rightless labor. Lilac is one of the latter — until she breaks free of her programming and sets out to find the woman responsible for her death, a decision that ripples outward from San Francisco to Siberia to South America.

Katie M. Flynn tells the story through eight alternating perspectives, human and companion alike, using the uploaded dead as a lens on love, class, and what obligations the living owe the people — or things — they leave behind.
