Synopsis

In the sleepy town of St. Petersburg, Missouri, on the banks of the Mississippi in the 1840s, a clever, restless boy named Tom Sawyer is forever slipping the leash of his exasperated Aunt Polly. Whether he's tricking his friends into whitewashing a fence for him, playing pirate on a river island, or courting the pretty new girl Becky Thatcher, Tom lives for mischief and adventure.

But boyhood games turn deadly serious when Tom and his friend Huckleberry Finn sneak into a graveyard at midnight and witness a murder. Bound by a blood oath of silence yet tormented by conscience, the boys are drawn into a chain of events involving a wrongly accused man, a vengeful killer, a hunt for buried treasure, and a terrifying ordeal in a vast underground cave.

Mark Twain's beloved 1876 classic captures the freedom, cruelty, and wonder of childhood along the American frontier. By turns funny, suspenseful, and sharply observed, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer remains one of the most enduring portraits of boyhood in all of literature.

John D. Seelye is a scholar whose work often explores the darker, more complex corners of American literature. He's particularly known for his insightful studies of Edgar Allan Poe, including his writings on Arthur Gordon Pym and Benito Cereno. If you enjoy deep dives into classic American tales, Seelye's perspective is a must-read.
