Synopsis

Brussels, 1942. Four-year-old Adrienne — Nothomb's mother as a child — is sent to live with her maternal grandmother in Ghent while the city is under German occupation. The grandmother is harsh: she forces the child to eat revolting food, punishes any sign of weakness, and runs the household as a discipline regime rather than a home. Adrienne survives by discovering a mantra — 'tant mieux' (so much the better) — a phrase of radical acceptance that she applies to every hardship: if it cannot be changed, it is better to be able to bear it than not. The novel completes a triptych: Premier Sang told her father's story, Psychopompe told her own, and Tant mieux is a long love letter to her mother's four-year-old self — the child whose ordeal became the adult who raised Amélie Nothomb. Published in 2025 by Albin Michel.

Amélie Nothomb

Born in Etterbeek, Brussels, in 1966, Amélie Nothomb spent her childhood moving across continents — Japan, China, the United States, Bangladesh, Burma, Laos — as the daughter of a Belgian diplomat. Japan was the country that marked her most deeply: she has called it the paradise she was expelled from when her family left. She began writing at age twelve, producing manuscripts she has described as unspeakably bad, and completed seventeen novels before publishing a single one. Her debut, Hygiène...

Frequently asked questions

  • Is Tant mieux part of a trilogy?

Yes — it completes a family triptych with Premier Sang (Nothomb's father Patrick, 2021) and Psychopompe (Nothomb herself, 2023). Together the three books reconstruct the family history through the generation before Nothomb and her own childhood.

  • When and where is Tant mieux set?

In Ghent, Belgium, in 1942 — during the German occupation of the country in the Second World War. The historical setting is minimal in the sense that the war is background rather than subject; what matters is the domestic regime Adrienne faces in her grandmother's house.

  • Who is Adrienne and what is her relationship to Nothomb?

Adrienne is Nothomb's mother as a four-year-old child. Nothomb reconstructs the experience of the child who would become her mother, as she did with her father in Premier Sang — writing the story of the person who made her by imagining them before she existed.

  • What does 'tant mieux' mean and why is it the title?

'Tant mieux' means 'so much the better' in French — a phrase of acceptance, of finding a way to make the unbearable less so. Four-year-old Adrienne applies it to every hardship imposed by her grandmother: what cannot be avoided is better faced than resisted. The mantra becomes her survival strategy and, eventually, the philosophy that shaped who she became.

  • Is the grandmother a real historical person?

She is based on Nothomb's actual maternal grandmother, who took in the young Adrienne during the war years. Nothomb has described her as a genuinely difficult figure in family memory.

  • Should I read Premier Sang and Psychopompe first?

Each book stands alone, but reading the three in order — Premier Sang, Psychopompe, Tant mieux — gives the full triptych its intended shape: father, self, mother. The emotional payoff of arriving at the mother's story after the father's and Nothomb's own is greater in sequence.
