Synopsis

Written amidst the chaos of history, this novel vividly portrays the June 1940 exodus, a tragic upheaval that swept up French families from all walks of life. Irène Némirovsky skillfully uncovers the countless small acts of cowardice and fragile moments of solidarity among a population in disarray. As the enemy occupies a fearful country, social tensions and frustrations in villages like Bussy are reignited, revealing the soul of each French person during the Occupation.
