Promethea (Book 2)

Synopsis

Benny Solomon, leader of a sinister cult called The Temple, sends two demons to hunt down Promethea and the teenage college student sharing her power, Sophie Bangs. Surviving the attack means Sophie has to actually learn the magic she's been carrying, and her living caduceus becomes her guide through a crash course that doubles as Alan Moore's tour of the Tarot's Major Arcana as a map of human development.

J.H. Williams III's artwork carries a lot of the weight here, shifting styles page to page, sometimes panel to panel, to visualize magical concepts that would otherwise stay abstract: psychedelic spreads, impressionistic linework, and dense symbolic detail that rewards slow reading.

Second in the Promethea series, this volume is where the book's dual identity, action comic and esoteric primer, really locks into place.
