Synopsis
Ms. Marvel, Vol. 1: No Normal collects the first five issues of G. Willow Wilson and Adrian Alphona's 2014 Ms. Marvel series, together with the character's debut material from All-New Marvel NOW! Point One. It introduces Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teenager growing up in Jersey City with her parents Yusuf and Muneeba and her older brother Aamir, and a devoted super hero fan who idolises Carol Danvers.
When Kamala sneaks out to a party against her parents' wishes, she is caught in the Terrigen Mists released during Marvel's Inhumanity event, and the exposure awakens dormant Inhuman genes she never knew she carried. The powers that follow let her stretch, shrink and enlarge her body — the ability she names "embiggening" — and she takes up the Ms. Marvel name in tribute to Danvers, who has since become Captain Marvel. The volume follows her first fumbling attempts at rescue work, and the widening gap between the costumed life she is improvising and the daughter, sister and student her family expects her to be.
Wilson writes the origin as a story about faith, family and growing up between cultures as much as a super hero debut, and Alphona's loose, detail-crammed art gives Jersey City a texture of its own. No Normal won the 2015 Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story.
