Synopsis

A fisherman's body washes up on a beach in the Rías Baixas, hands tied — what first looks like a man lost to the sea turns out, once the autopsy comes back, to be murder. Inspector Leo Caldas of the Vigo police takes the case, working through a small coastal community of fishermen who are reluctant to talk and, when they finally do, point him in an unexpected direction.

The investigation pulls Caldas back to a fishing boat that sank near the island of Sálvora one stormy night twelve years earlier, and to a woman who went missing that same night. As old secrets the town has kept for over a decade start to surface, Caldas has to weigh silence against evidence in a place where the sea and its losses shape everyone's account of the truth.

The second novel in the Leo Caldas series, following "Ojos de agua," it pairs the procedural with a quieter personal thread — Caldas's ailing uncle and his uneasy partnership with his brash Aragonese colleague, Rafael Estévez — against the atmospheric backdrop of Galicia's Vigo estuary.
