Synopsis

Armand Gamache, suspended from the Sûreté du Québec and awaiting the verdict on his career, is summoned to a derelict farmhouse outside Three Pines and told that a stranger has named him one of three executors of her will. The dead woman was a cleaning lady. The will leaves her heirs a fortune she never had.

It is a joke, or a delusion — until one of the beneficiaries is killed, and the absurd document becomes a motive.

Running beneath it is the thing Gamache cannot say aloud: the shipment of opioids he deliberately allowed through in order to catch something bigger is still in circulation, and every day it stays out there, people die. Kingdom of the Blind is the fourteenth Chief Inspector Gamache novel — a book about the price of a calculated gamble, and about a man forced to act with no badge, no authority, and very little time.
