Synopsis

Anne Shirley takes up the post of principal at Summerside High School on Prince Edward Island while Gilbert Blythe finishes medical school, and the two are apart for the three years before their wedding. She lodges at Windy Poplars with two elderly widows, Aunt Kate and Aunt Chatty, their housekeeper Rebecca Dew, and their cat Dusty Miller, and writes long letters to Gilbert describing her new life.

Anne's chief challenge is the clannish Pringle family, who have run the school district for years and resent an outsider taking the post; she also has to win over her cold vice-principal, Katherine Brooke. Along the way she meets Summerside's more eccentric residents, gets tangled in several of their romances, and befriends the lonely, motherless Elizabeth Grayson next door.

The fourth book in L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series, first published in 1936, is told largely through Anne's letters and closes with her departure from Summerside to marry Gilbert.
