Synopsis

Fifteen years into her marriage to Gilbert Blythe, Anne is raising six children in Glen St. Mary, Prince Edward Island. When the widowed Presbyterian minister John Meredith moves into the nearby manse with his four children and their elderly Aunt Martha, the Blythe and Meredith children meet in a valley the younger generation names Rainbow Valley and become fast friends.

Left largely to themselves by their distracted, grieving father, the Meredith children — Jerry, Faith, Una, and Carl — become a source of scandal to the prim and proper members of the community, while Mary Vance, a runaway orphan who had been mistreated by the family that took her in, joins the group and is eventually adopted. Alongside the children's adventures, a quiet romance develops between John Meredith and Rosemary West.

Published in 1919 as the seventh book in L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series, Rainbow Valley shifts focus away from Anne herself to the next generation, following the Blythe and Meredith children's friendships and mischief.
