Anna Sinclair, a successful New York book editor, returns to her Caribbean home to find her mother dying of breast cancer — and her father refusing to let her seek treatment in the United States, convinced that the racial prejudices he has faced his entire life will follow her there. Caught between two worlds, Anna must confront the cost of her own assimilation and the deep divide between the life she built in Manhattan and the one her parents have fought to keep.
