About this series

Signet Classics is a paperback imprint of the New American Library, now part of Penguin Random House — a publishing line, not a series with a reading order. It traces to February 1948, when Signet and Mentor Books launched under the slogan "Good Reading for the Millions"; Mentor's classics list and Signet's fiction list later merged into the single Signet Classics imprint. The line now runs to nearly 400 titles, from Greek mythology and the Shakespeare plays to novels of the twentieth century, typically issued with a scholarly introduction and, in later printings, an afterword. The books gathered here are unrelated works by different authors across several centuries and may be read in any order. Any numbering attached to the imprint elsewhere reflects a catalogue's own sequence, not a reading order.
