Frequently asked questions
Has Luis Mateo Díez won the Premio Cervantes?
Yes. He was awarded the Premio Miguel de Cervantes in 2023, the highest distinction in Spanish-language letters. Spain's Ministry of Culture announced the jury's decision on 7 November 2023, citing him as "one of the great narrators of the Castilian language, heir to the Cervantine spirit, a writer in the face of all adversity, a creator of imaginary worlds and territories". The prize was presented by the King and Queen of Spain in April 2024. The Cervantes is a career award: it recognises a writer's body of work as a whole, and is never given to a single book. It should not be confused with his seat in the Real Academia Española, which he has held since 2001 — that is an academic membership rather than a prize.
