Synopsis

Unstoppable Us, Volume 2: Why the World Isn't Fair continues Yuval Noah Harari's history of humankind for younger readers, illustrated in full colour by Ricard Zaplana Ruiz.

This one is about what happened when people stopped roaming and settled down. Hunter-gatherer ancestors become village farmers; land gets cultivated, resources get shared unevenly, kingdoms and laws appear, pyramids get built and taxes get paid.

Out of all that comes the question the title asks. Inequality is not treated as a fact of nature here but as something humans built, along with the inventions and institutions that came with it, and the book is honest about the price people paid for civilisation as well as what they gained.

Maps, timelines and cartoon illustrations run throughout. Written for readers of about ten and up, it follows Volume 1 and can also be read on its own.
