Synopsis

Helene survives occupied Belgium by passing as a boy and selling copies of Le Soir, the nation's newspaper, now co-opted as Nazi propaganda. Her life changes when she falls in with Marc Aubrion and his underground network of dissident journalists — until the Nazis catch them and offer an impossible choice: turn the resistance press into a propaganda weapon, or die.

Aubrion's answer is to fake a real edition of Le Soir that mocks Hitler and Stalin in plain sight, betting eighteen days and their lives on landing the joke. Based on a real wartime hoax, The Ventriloquists follows the ragtag team assembling the forgery under the Nazis' nose.
