Synopsis

The Valley of Bones is the first of three war-set novels in Anthony Powell's sprawling, decades-spanning series A Dance to the Music of Time. Told entirely in the first person, it follows Nick Jenkins as he joins the British Army and is assigned to a company of men from vastly different social backgrounds — a banker, a miner, a clerk, a young priest — and watches how the shared experience of combat reshapes each of them. Nick's wry, detached narration turns the chaos of military life into a meditation on class, friendship, and the loss of innocence. The novel's title and its opening chapter are drawn from the biblical vision of the Valley of Dry Bones, and the book's structure—divided into four distinct sections—builds toward a final, unexpected appearance by a character from an earlier volume. A classic of 20th-century English fiction, it is both a study of war as much as a study of the men who fight it.
