Synopsis

Set in the years following the Great War, this first volume of A Dance to the Music of Time follows Nicholas Jenkins and his classmates at an elite boarding school and later Oxford. It observes the shifting social hierarchies and the early ambitions of young men like the eccentric Charles Stringham and the socially climbing Widmerpool. Through dry wit and sharp observation, the story captures the transition from youth to the complexities of adult society.
