Synopsis

On the dungeon's fourth floor, Carl and Princess Donut plunge into the Iron Tangle — an impossibly tangled subway system fused from the world's subterranean railways, its cars crawling with monsters and its stations no safer than the tracks. With the leaderboard's top ten now public and a sponsorship auction underway, Carl's overnight fame makes him both a draw for allies and a target for bounty hunters. A survival guide passed hand-to-hand between crawlers — the Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook — may be the only way through, as old friends and fierce new allies band together against a floor built to turn crawler against crawler.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the Iron Tangle, and how is floor four different from earlier floors?

Floor four is the Iron Tangle — a single subway system formed by fusing the world's subterranean railways together, its cars packed with monsters and its stations no safer. For the first time the leaderboard's top-ten list and a sponsorship auction both go live, which changes how crawlers approach the floor and each other.

  • Is this the funniest book in the series?

Many readers think so. The anarchist cookbook premise gives Dinniman maximum room for absurdist inventions, and the tone leans harder into comedy here than in any other book.

  • Do the crawlers actually start cooperating on this floor?

Yes — floor four is the first time crawler groups begin working together instead of purely competing, partly out of necessity to survive the Iron Tangle's trains and stations, and partly because Carl's sudden fame (and a new bounty system) reshapes everyone's incentives.

  • Do I need to have read books one and two?

Yes. The series is heavily serialized; starting here would leave you lost on character arcs and dungeon context established in the first two books.

  • Does Mordecai have a larger role here?

Mordecai's investment in Carl and Donut's survival deepens across the middle books. Book three is where his past and motivations start to become meaningful rather than just functional.

  • Are new companions added?

Yes. The found-family element continues to grow, and book three introduces or develops relationships that persist through the rest of the series.

  • Does the series start getting darker from here?

The humor stays consistent through book three, but the stakes and losses deepen from book four onward. Book three is generally considered one of the lighter entries in the later series.
