Synopsis

A lifeboat drifts ashore on the Swedish coast carrying two murdered men, and detective Kurt Wallander is assigned to the case. The investigation leads him across the Baltic to Riga, where he teams up with a Latvian detective to uncover a conspiracy involving Latvian intelligence and a ruthless underworld. As the mystery deepens, Wallander must confront the true cost of the truth in a city where old secrets refuse to stay buried.

Henning Mankell was born in Stockholm, Sweden, the son of a judge. He grew up in the towns of Sveg and Borås. His grandfather, also called Henning Mankell (1868–1930), was a well-known composer. At the age of 20, Mankell was the assistant director at the Riks Theater in Stockholm, and he was also writing.
