Synopsis

Set in a hotel in 1960s Egypt, The Secret of Room 207 gathers a series of interlinked horror stories that all take place inside a single room — number 207 — which the hotel's owner refuses to close despite a string of horrors that have unfolded there. The tales are held together by Gamal, a hotel receptionist who watches guest after guest pass through the room's door and come out changed, if they come out at all.

Ahmed Khaled Towfik, widely regarded as the pioneer of modern Arabic horror and science fiction, builds a slow, mounting dread reminiscent of Stephen King's "1408" — Towfik noted in his introduction that he had not read King's story before writing his own. Rather than a single continuous plot, the book unfolds as a sequence of self-contained encounters with the room, each guest bringing their own fears and secrets into its walls.

First published in 2008, the novel became one of Towfik's most recognizable standalone horror works, distinct from his long-running "Ma Waraa al-Tabiaa" (Beyond Nature) series — though it features a brief cameo from that series' central character, Refaat Ismail, as one of the room's guests. The book was adapted into a well-received ten-episode television series in 2022.
