Shoestring Theory

Synopsis

The kingdom of Farsala lies broken, and former grand-mage Cyril Laverre has spent the last decade hiding in a seaside hut with only his cat familiar, Shoestring, for company — quietly consumed by guilt over his part in the ruin his husband, King Eufrates Margrave, brought upon the realm. When Shoestring dies, Cyril knows his own time is running out. With his remaining lifeblood he casts one last spell, hurling himself back to an earlier, happier period of Farsalan history: a time before Eufrates's older sister Tig died and left him heir to the throne, and before Cyril and Eufrates's romance had even begun. If Cyril can keep Eufrates from ever becoming king, he might save the kingdom — and himself — from the future he remembers. A queer, time-travelling fantasy debut featuring a formidable great-aunt, a crow familiar named Ganache, and a friends-to-lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers romance.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is Shoestring Theory a standalone novel?

Yes — it's Mariana Costa's debut and a complete story, not part of a series.

  • Does the protagonist travel back in time alone?

Cyril is not the only one who retains his memories after the time spell, as his husband Eufrates is also brought back into his younger body, forcing both men to navigate their past relationship while aware of the future horrors they previously endured.

  • Is there a specific structural quirk to the narrative?

The story unfolds through a non-linear structure that reveals the past, present, and future timelines gradually over the first half of the book, which can create a sense of disorientation for the reader until the pieces align.
