Synopsis
Twelve stories of soldiers and civilians touched by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, moving between the front line's mix of boredom, bureaucracy, comradeship and sudden violence, and the isolation and remorse that follow a soldier home. Winner of the 2014 National Book Award for Fiction, Phil Klay's debut collection captures the impossible demand placed on ordinary Americans sent to kill and then expected to simply resume civilian life.
