Ocean's Godori
Synopsis
Ocean Yoon descends from a long line of haenyeo, the female free divers of Jeju Island, yet she has never matched the idea of Korean identity that others expect of her. After a mission went wrong, the Alliance, Korea's dominant space agency, shut her out. She now pilots the Ohneul, one of the few ships still willing to take her on.
Her oldest friend Teo is the second son of the powerful Anand Tech family. When he is framed for the murder of his own relatives, Ocean and her mismatched crewmates are pulled into a conflict that reaches the top levels of Alliance politics. A new crew member, ostracized for her own reasons, joins them along the way.
This is space opera with a Korean flavor, and it is built around a ship's crew. The action moves fast, and a slow-burning romance runs beneath it, the kind where neither side admits much for a long time. Colonialism and family loyalty give the plot its weight.
Ocean has to decide how far she will go for the people she loves. She also has to settle what she owes to the past that made her. The reading is brisk and character-driven, with the stakes rising as the political case against Teo widens.
